Lillian James, affectionately known as Lilee, is the driving force behind Lilee’s Whistle Cleaning Services, a company she founded with a passion that is nothing short of inspiring. Lilee is no ordinary CEO; she sees cleaning not just as a job but as a mission deeply rooted in personal values and life experiences. Her passion for cleanliness and organization goes beyond surface-level sparkle; she views it as essential to mental health and a foundational aspect of living well. “Cleaning will always be important to society,” she explains. “I believe that cleanliness is next to godliness. If you leave your home dirty and go to work, your day will not go as well as it could due to the mess you left at home.” For Lilee, the act of cleaning is more than tidying spaces—it is about creating environments that foster peace and well-being.

Lilee vision for her company is ambitious, aiming to expand into Tobago and become a leading name in the cleaning industry, but she also wants to use her business as a platform to educate others. She believes in enlightening people on the benefits of a clean space and the often-overlooked link between cleanliness, mental health, and personal hygiene, not just at home but in business settings as well. Lilee is not simply in business for profit; her mission is rooted in a larger purpose—to remind everyone that maintaining a tidy space can have a profound impact on their mental well-being.

What led Lilee to start her business is a story of resilience and vision born from adversity. Growing up in a low-income home in Laventille and experiencing the challenges of a rough community, Lilee always aspired to create a better life for her son. Her upbringing instilled in her a deep empathy for single parents, students, and those facing financial and social challenges. She hopes to support people facing struggles similar to those she experienced, by creating employment opportunities and offering part-time jobs to students, single parents, and other community members. This drive, coupled with a deeply personal experience of uncertainty, cemented her path to entrepreneurship. After working ten years at a well-known retail warehouse, Lilee found herself facing the instability of job loss. A suspension in September 2014 became the catalyst for her business idea. “I lay on my bed thinking to myself, what can I do? What would I like to do?” she recalls. This moment of fear and uncertainty pushed her to think of an idea that would be her own—something she could build from the ground up.

With encouragement from her aunt in London, Lilee began her research, gathered information, and Lilee’s Whistle Cleaning Services was born. Her vision was simple yet ambitious: to clean not only homes and apartments but offices and construction sites as well. “We can make anywhere clean as a whistle—no job is too big or small. We clean it all,” she says. Her company has grown over the years, building a reputation for reliable, efficient, and trustworthy service across Trinidad and Tobago. Today, Lilee’s Whistle Cleaning Services stands as a testament to her hard work and dedication. Starting from scratch, she printed flyers, created logos, and promoted her business door-to-door, leaving flyers in mailboxes and gradually expanding her clientele.

A key ingredient to Lilee’s success has been her strong support system. She credits her son’s father, her mother, friends, and fellow female entrepreneurs for encouraging her every step of the way. Family members even work alongside her, sharing in her commitment to providing top-notch cleaning services. Her clients, both loyal and new, are also a huge part of her journey; she understands that without them, her business would not be where it is today.

Lilee continues to balance her entrepreneurial responsibilities with a full-time role as an Administrative Assistant at G4S Secure Solutions Ltd. She admits that time management has been a challenge, but she uses every tool at her disposal—Google Docs, calendar reminders, Samsung Notes, and writing pads—to organize her day effectively. She has learned to make every moment count, carving out time for her business and balancing her responsibilities in both roles.
To aspiring entrepreneurs, Lilee offers words of wisdom drawn from her own journey: “Do a lot of research, plan carefully, and take short courses in time management, entrepreneurship, marketing, and branding.” She advises new business owners to seek knowledge from experienced entrepreneurs and to use every tool and app available to help streamline their efforts. She also stresses the importance of resilience and self-belief, urging others not to listen to naysayers. “Start where you are with what you have, and build yourself and your business,” she says. “Time is precious; stay focused and never give up.”

Reflecting on her years of experience, Lilee shares that one of the greatest lessons she learned was the importance of financial security. Depending on a single salary had once been a vulnerability; now, she is committed to maintaining multiple income streams. Her years working at Price Smart taught her about human nature, responsibility, and discipline—skills she has carried forward into her business.
Today, when she’s not working or managing her business, Lilee enjoys spending quality time with her son, exercising, and participating in Trinidad and Tobago’s lively carnival culture. She embraces every moment of downtime, knowing that her hard work has paved the way for a brighter future. Lilee’s journey is not only one of resilience and adaptability but a powerful reminder that, with determination and dedication, anything is possible. She sums up her philosophy simply: “With hard work, dedication, commitment, and determination, anything is possible. Visualize this thing that you want, see it, feel it, believe in it. Make a mental blueprint and begin to build.”
