Wispy Willow Candle Shoppe is on a mission to become Trinidad and Tobago’s premier destination for high-quality, handcrafted candles and wax-related goods. A brand that blends tradition with creativity, Wispy Willow finds inspiration in Irish heritage, with the intention of honoring cultural practices that celebrate light and ambiance. Their Christmas line, for instance, drew heavily from Irish culture. The shop caters to a wide range of customers, offering contemporary, seasonal, pop-culture and arcane-themed candles, along with premium candle supplies for both enthusiasts and professionals. As a growing brand, Wispy Willow is determined to provide an unmatched experience in the local market, combining a robust e-commerce presence with personalized customer service and island-wide delivery. The brand aspires to be more than just a supplier of candles; it is a celebration of heritage, craftsmanship and innovation, designed to bring light to every home and occasion. Though still in its infancy, with things moving at a slower pace, the vision for the future is clear.

The founders of Wispy Willow, Angel and Ryan, are a married couple with a shared passion for candles. The name Wispy Willow was Angel’s idea, deeply rooted in her Irish heritage. “Wispy” is a nod to the mystical Irish and Scottish folklore of Will-o’-the-Wisps, ethereal lights that guided lost travelers through the dark, showing them the way home. These lights, believed to be ghosts, fairies, or elemental spirits, represent guidance through uncertain times, a fitting metaphor for a candle shop. “Willow,” on the other hand, carries a personal significance for Angel. Growing up visiting her Irish family in the United States, she remembers the willow trees at her grandparents’ homes, a symbol of comfort and nostalgia. The name came together with a touch of whimsy and tradition. The use of “Shoppe,” an old-fashioned spelling, was intentional, adding a cozy, familiar feel with a hint of fantasy. The couple hopes the rustic aesthetic of the business will evoke a sense of nostalgia, warmth, and magic, setting the stage for future expansions into skincare and bodycare.

For Angel and Ryan, the business is a part-time venture. Angel juggles her work and studies, while Ryan maintains a full-time job. Despite these commitments, managing the business isn’t too difficult. They spend about one to two hours daily on social media or candle-making. The process of crafting candles is surprisingly time-efficient, as much of the work involves melting, adding dyes and scents, and waiting for the candles to harden and set. This allows the couple ample time to focus on other aspects of the business. Their schedule is flexible, with work being done during lunch breaks or in moments of free time, further fueling their passion for their craft.

The inspiration behind the business came from a desire for creative freedom. Both Angel and Ryan possess unique creative strengths. Angel’s bursts of creativity, her eye for color, and her attention to detail have led her to hand-paint each candle herself. On the other hand, Ryan’s creativity stems from a methodical approach, finding inventive solutions and bringing ideas to life through constant adjustments and observations. Their combined talents have given birth to a truly special product. But more than that, they wanted a business that would provide them with the flexibility to explore their creativity without the constraints of a typical job. This entrepreneurial venture offers them the freedom to set their own hours, experiment with ideas and immerse themselves in a project they both deeply care about.

As a young business, Wispy Willow has already made significant strides. During the Christmas season, the couple managed to break even, thanks to the support of friends and family who purchased their candles. This allowed them to recover much of their initial investment. Through social media advertising, they have also reached thousands of people and, little by little, are building momentum. While they are still in the early stages of their journey, the couple is encouraged by the progress they have made so far.

The biggest lesson they have learned so far is patience. From the early days of candle-making, there were numerous mistakes -candles de-molded too early, rushed painting jobs, and countless moments of frustration. What they quickly learned, however, is that candles are a luxury item, not a necessity for most people. Bridging the gap between their target market and themselves took time and while they’re still on that path, they have learned to embrace the journey. They have also learned that staying patient is crucial, especially when starting from scratch without the backing of a large corporation.
For others considering starting a business, Angel and Ryan’s advice is to start slow. Take the time to do thorough research and ensure there’s an audience for what you intend to offer. They spent nearly three years building the confidence and finances to launch Wispy Willow. While there’s often pressure to be the first to market, they stress the importance of being proud of what you’re creating and being willing to pivot as needed. Above all, patience and a calm head are essential.
When asked to define their brand, Angel and Ryan describe it as an identity that evokes a specific emotional response from customers. For Wispy Willow, they hope their brand brings feelings of comfort, wonder, and an almost ethereal sense of fantasy. There’s something magical about the warm glow and gentle scent of a burning candle, transforming any space into a peaceful sanctuary.

For them, a business exists to fulfill a need or purpose, while a brand goes further, developing its own personality and identity within the market. Wispy Willow aims to provide more than just a candle – it seeks to create an experience, an escape, and a connection to something larger than the product itself. The couple believes that by infusing their brand with meaning and identity, they can offer more than just a physical item – they’re offering a little piece of magic.
While they haven’t yet had the opportunity to participate in any pop-up shops, Angel and Ryan are planning to attend several markets in the coming year, including South Markets. They’re eager to increase their visibility and continue building their presence in the local community.
As Wispy Willow Candle Shoppe moves forward, Angel and Ryan are committed to growing their business with care, creativity, and patience. They’ve only just begun, but their vision for the future is bright, and they are ready to share their light with the world.
