The Passion of Night Owl

NightOwl Designs, the creative brand founded by Shireen Ragoobir, is a dynamic artistic venture that offers a range of services including traditional and digital illustration, graphic design, murals, henna and face painting. Shireen has built a portfolio that includes illustrating three local authors’ colouring books and designing a planner for teachers. Through NightOwl Designs, Shireen brings creativity to life, creating designs that serve both aesthetic and functional purposes.

The name NightOwl Designs was chosen by Shireen to reflect her late-night working habits. Often inspired during the quiet hours, she wanted a name that conveyed wisdom and knowledge while also remaining grounded and ethereal. The name embodies the late-night work ethic and the deep, thoughtful creativity that goes into each project.

While NightOwl Designs is a growing freelance business, Shireen also works full-time as a Visual Arts teacher at Moruga Secondary School. Balancing the demands of teaching and freelance work is no easy feat, but Shireen makes it work by staying disciplined and managing her time efficiently. She dedicates time after school hours to meet client deadlines and nurture her creative passion.

Art has always been a part of Shireen’s life, with a natural inclination toward creative expression. Encouraged by her community to turn her skills into services, she ventured into the world of entrepreneurship, recognizing the potential to combine her passion with a means of serving others.

Shireen’s entrepreneurial journey has been marked by several major milestones. In 2021, she graduated from the University of the West Indies with a BA in Visual Arts with First Class Honours. That same year, she contributed to the painting of a large mural on the National Library Building. She also illustrated and designed the covers for the narrated coloring books “Let’s Colour Divali” and “Let’s Colour Carnival” by Ila Maharaj, as well as “All About Trini Christmas” by Fazeeda Khan and Nirmala Ramnath. Additionally, Shireen designed a planner for teachers, showcasing her versatility as an artist.

Through these achievements, Shireen has learned that discipline is key to accomplishing goals and that self-belief is crucial in the journey of entrepreneurship. The experience has taught her the importance of staying committed, continuously improving, and remaining true to her creative vision.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Shireen’s advice is to follow what brings joy and invest time in honing those skills. Success requires dedication, hours of learning, and practice, but passion and persistence will eventually pay off. Shireen believes that finding what you love and pursuing it with determination is the foundation of any successful venture.

To Shireen, a brand is not just a logo or a name but an identity. It’s what sets a person or business apart from others, providing a unique and recognizable presence in the marketplace. While a business offers products or services, a brand is what defines those offerings and gives them meaning.

The local brand community in Trinidad and Tobago is thriving, with a growing number of small businesses that bring unique perspectives and offerings to the market. Shireen loves seeing the creativity and innovation in local brands, particularly in the areas of branding and packaging. The rise of craft markets and the diversity of local businesses reflect the vibrant entrepreneurial spirit in the country.

Though Shireen has participated in various markets, her most notable experience has been as a vendor at Southmarket TT at C3. Each market appearance has allowed her to promote a different artistic skill, from illustration to henna to face painting, and connect with the local creative community.

NightOwl Designs, under Shireen Ragoobir’s vision, stands as a testament to the power of creativity, perseverance, and self-belief. The brand continues to inspire both aspiring artists and entrepreneurs, showcasing the limitless possibilities of turning passion into a meaningful, thriving business.
