When Trin’s Treats & Desserts first started in 2020, it wasn’t with grand ambitions or a five-year business plan. It began with a young woman, some butter, sugar and a whole lot of heart. What started as a form of stress relief during her university days in Jamaica turned into a full-fledged business rooted in love, resilience and a deep desire to bring joy through dessert. The brand was born from a nickname, “Trin,” affectionately given to her by her Jamaican friends who couldn’t help but associate her with the sweet treats she would bake and share with her dorm mates. One friend, in particular, kept chanting “Trin’s Treats” every time she pulled something warm and delicious out of the oven. Years later, when unemployment loomed, she remembered that chant and decided to give the business a go. She reached out to that very friend, who not only revived the name but created the logo, chose the colour scheme and launched the brand’s online presence. That moment of collaboration and belief set everything in motion.

Today, Trin’s Treats & Desserts is quietly becoming one of Trinidad’s hidden gems in the world of custom cakes and baked goods. Now based in El Socorro after a move from Diego Martin two years ago, the business has grown steadily, offering decadent buttercream cakes, gooey brownies, creamy cheesecakes, cookies and other comforting favourites. Everything is made in-house using high quality ingredients and small batch methods to ensure flavour, freshness and consistency. It’s a business that’s grounded in two principles: quality and affordability. The goal is simple but powerful, to make dessert an accessible joy, no matter someone’s budget.

Behind the brand is a woman who juggles a full-time career in food safety and quality while running the business mostly on her own. It’s not easy. Some days stretch into sleepless nights, especially during busy seasons or special promotions, but the love for baking and the appreciation from clients makes every ounce of effort worth it. She’s had moments where doubt crept in. In the early days, she worried that no one would want to buy a cake from her. But as orders started to trickle in, followed by glowing feedback and repeat customers, she realised she was on the right path. There may not have been a business degree or a big budget behind Trin’s Treats, but what it had, and still has, is passion, persistence and a clear sense of purpose.

The brand is still evolving. She’s currently working on launching monthly specials with single-serving options, something she doesn’t typically offer, so that more people can enjoy a little sweetness without having to commit to a whole cake. She’s also exploring alternative baking for the future, including no-sugar and eggless options, responding to the growing demand for inclusive desserts that everyone can enjoy. That kind of forward thinking, rooted in empathy for the customer, is what makes Trin’s Treats more than just a business. It’s a brand with soul.

Her definition of a brand is refreshingly human. To her, a brand is what people think and feel when they hear your name. It’s the impression you leave behind, the experience, the taste, the emotion. A business may keep the operations going, but the brand is what makes people come back. It’s reputation, it’s connection. That philosophy has helped her shape how she approaches her own journey. She’s not just selling desserts. She’s building something people remember.

Even though she hasn’t yet participated in markets or pop-ups, mostly due to time and resource constraints, it’s definitely something she wants to explore. In fact, she’s incredibly inspired by how Trinidad and Tobago’s brand ecosystem has blossomed in recent years. She believes that while the pandemic brought hardship, it also sparked innovation and unity within the local entrepreneurial scene. The rise of niche businesses, vibrant pop-up fairs and a renewed focus on community-led marketing have all helped make the local economy more diverse and culturally rich. She’s proud to be part of that wave and sees endless potential in the growing appetite for homegrown brands.

The road hasn’t always been easy, but it’s taught her valuable lessons, especially about resilience. From rising ingredient costs to slow seasons, being an entrepreneur means learning to adapt, problem-solve and find new ways to stay relevant. She believes innovation is key to survival, and staying true to your brand is the compass that will keep you grounded when things get tough. Her advice to other entrepreneurs is simple but powerful: stay consistent, be authentic and don’t be afraid to enjoy the process. There will be highs and lows, but every moment is part of the journey.

Trin’s Treats & Desserts is more than a brand. It’s a reminder that something sweet can come out of uncertainty. It’s a story of a young woman who followed her instincts, trusted her talent and turned a side passion into a meaningful business. It’s proof that with the right mix of vision, heart and hustle, great things can rise, just like a perfect cake in the oven.
