In Abundance: How Nuba Caribbean Is Redefining Skincare with Soul, Science and Sustainability

In a world that increasingly demands more sustainable and intentional living, Nuba Caribbean is a beacon of abundance and healing. Founded by Trinidadian herbalist and esthetician Anisa Wilson, the eco-conscious skincare and wellness brand is a love letter to nature, rooted deeply in the Caribbean landscape and culture. Built on the ethos of care, for skin, for the planet and for self,  Nuba Caribbean crafts high-performance plant-based products formulated especially for sensitive skin and tropical climates. What sets the brand apart is not just its reef-safe vegan-friendly skincare but the spirit that drives it: a belief in wholeness, healing and heritage.

Nuba Caribbean isn’t just about beauty. It’s beauty backed by purpose. From formulation to packaging, the brand is grounded in social responsibility. One of its most meaningful efforts is the Nuba Coral Care Initiative, a growing project created to support reef-safe skincare practices and promote marine sustainability. Through a collaboration with ERIC (Environmental Research Institute Charlotteville), Nuba Caribbean is actively advocating for coral regrowth and the protection of marine ecosystems. It’s a rare intersection where skincare and science meet ocean activism, and it reflects the brand’s deeper mission, to heal, not just human skin, but the natural world too.

The name Nuba itself is steeped in meaning. Derived from the Igbo word “N’uba” which translates to “in abundance” it represents Anisa’s long-held vision of building something vast, varied and impactful. As a teenager she imagined building an empire akin to Massy, diverse and multifaceted. That youthful ambition matured into a brand family that now includes Nuba Skincare, Nuba Bebi, Nuba Littles and Nuba Organic. Each extension honours the brand’s original commitment to offer wellness in abundance for everyone at every life stage.

The journey has not been without challenges. Once full-time in her business, Anisa had to adjust her pace after becoming a single mother to twins and facing personal trials including a broken humerus. Now running the business part-time, she balances motherhood with entrepreneurship, drawing strength from a strong support system of family and friends. Though the juggling act is demanding, she has learned to find rhythm in the chaos and give space for rest, parenting, work and passion.

Anisa’s entrepreneurial spirit was evident from as early as 12 years old when she drafted her first business plan on sheets of copy paper, dreaming of a graphic design firm. Her love for art slowly evolved into a deep appreciation for the environment, an evolution sparked by her own health journey. Living with a lupus gene meant facing persistent eczema, sun sensitivity and severe reactions to conventional products. She began studying herbs at 14, driven by a need to heal herself when nothing else worked. At 18 she dreamed of opening an eco-resort. Eventually she decided to start with the products, a tangible expression of care and sustainability.

One of the early turning points came when her formulations helped heal severe dermatitis in a pair of five-year-old twins. That moment affirmed what she already knew, that nature had answers and she had the ability to harness them. Since then, Nuba Caribbean has achieved a series of powerful milestones: reversing chronic skin conditions, creating refillable packaging, reaching clients in the French Alps, the African continent and the USA and earning dermatologist recommendations. Her NICU-safe baby products and salon-quality skincare have positioned the brand as both science-forward and soul-led.

The lessons she’s learned along the way are as rich as the products she makes. She’s come to understand that slow is fast and that real progress lies in deep intentional relationships, with oneself, with business partners and with the community. She’s discovered that intuition is a compass worth trusting and that contracts, no matter how small the arrangement, are essential. Entrepreneurship, she believes, isn’t just about hustle. It’s about awareness, boundaries and the willingness to start over if needed.

To those just beginning their entrepreneurial journey, Anisa offers grounded humble advice: be open to learning at every level. Some of the most valuable lessons come from unexpected places. Build a solid foundation, don’t fear reinvention and keep going no matter how many times you need to pivot. Resilience, she says, is a quiet superpower.

Anisa’s vision of a brand is not something static or surface-level. At Nuba, a brand is a living thing, a dynamic force with heart and intention. It’s not just about logos or packaging, it’s about how you make people feel, the legacy you leave and the values you uphold. A business handles operations yes, but a brand, a brand tells a story. It stirs emotion. It stands the test of time.

She sees the local brand community in Trinidad and Tobago as growing and filled with potential. While she doesn’t participate in many markets due to time constraints, you can find Nuba Caribbean’s products at 36 Cornelio Street and soon at Skincare Junkies in Normandie, Casta Retreats Eco Resort and ERIC in Charlotteville. Her reach extends far beyond local borders, shipping globally through her websites www.nubacaribbean.com and nubaskyn.com.

Through Nuba, Anisa Wilson has created something bigger than a business, a movement of healing and sustainability rooted in abundance. Her products aren’t just made to moisturise or cleanse, they’re made to connect. To honour culture. To nurture skin and spirit alike. Every jar, bottle and balm is a reminder that care is an act of resistance and abundance a choice.
